A bit spooky this one! Mike wrote this especially for Esther.
There’s an eerie glow
Up the stairs,
Causing me to have nightmares.
In the dark
And brooding night,
Something waits to give me a fright!
The spooky glow
Is in my dreams;
I think it must be something mean.
I must be brave
And take a peep,
Or else I’ll never get to sleep.
So up I climb
On tippy toes,
Treading softly as I go.
Step by step,
One by one,
On wobbly legs; my strength is gone.
The stairs they squeak,
Complain and groan;
The trees outside, they sigh and moan.
The paintings on
The landing wall,
Make me feel so very small.
The window lets
A cold breeze in,
It gives me goosebumps on my skin.
And all the while
This thing I know;
I’m getting closer to the glow.
A big, black spider
Looks at me,
I think he’d like me for his tea.
I’m sure
It isn’t just my mind,
A shadow’s sneaking up behind!
I creep and crawl,
I’m nearly there;
I’m on the very final stair!
I see the glow now,
Under a door,
It flickers on the wooden floor.
I reach out
And take the handle,
Holding tight my precious candle.
The door creaks open
What do I see?
Blue eyes staring back at me!
It’s a boy,
About my height,
He’s reading a book by candlelight.
He whispers,
“It’s all Ok, come on, sit here,
There isn’t any need to fear”.
He puts his candle
Next to mine,
Then we talk for the longest time.
A waxy flow
Dribbles down,
And forms a puddle on the ground.
Our candle wax,
All mixed it is;
I can’t tell which is mine, or his.
The candles’ glow
Is near its end.
I’m glad I dared to find a friend.
The time has flown,
My friend must go;
He takes my hand in the fading glow.
“If you‘re free tomorrow,
And there’s nice weather
Can we go out and play together?”
